On Tuesday, 7th April, the St. Peter’s International School Model United Nations held an internal debate on the topic of ‘Stalin’s Purges’. The students organised this debate in a Historical Committee and the theme was based on the Extended Essay written by Maria Manuela Cunha (IB2).
Maria Manuela also chaired the debate, in collaboration with her colleagues from IB1, Lia Odorico and Clarissa Ferreira.
The event was an excellent opportunity to showcase the impressive debating and organisational skills of all the committee’s members, and the level of professionalism and oratory skills was outstanding.
At the end of the morning’s debate, the following students were commended for their participation:
Best delegation: Egypt, represented by Henrique Palma (IG2) and Margarida Perneco (IG2);
Best speaker: Cuba, represented by Sérgio Ribeiro (IG2)
Honourable mentions for West Germany, represented by Quishi Zhou (IG2) and France, represented by Beatriz Carvalho (IB1) and Beatriz Nunes (IB1).
This Internal Debate is an example of the extraordinary work carried out throughout the year, at lunch times, even during the lock down period, under the guidance of Miss Helen Gonçalves and Miss Kate Tingley.
As Miss Helen states, “I felt it gave everyone a very good natural high at the end of what has been a long and tough quarantine!”
